PLACES TO EXPLORE

With all the recent rain, the creeks are actually flowing. A few spots worth chasing while the water's running:

  • Sculpture Falls at Barton Creek Greenbelt - Hike in from the Hill of Life trailhead to limestone tiers, natural pools, and rock recliners carved by the current. Best right after rain; dead in a drought. About 1.5 miles down, and you climb back up. Trailhead at Scottish Woods Trail (paid parking; Camp Craft gets towed).

  • Twin Falls at Barton Creek Greenbelt - The most accessible falls, about 0.4 miles from the MoPac trailhead. Sunny ledges, a shaded pool, and deep enough for rock jumping when flow is up. Packed on weekends, so go early. 3900 MoPac Frontage Rd.

  • Gus Fruh at Barton Creek Greenbelt - A deep, cliff-lined pool with a rope-swing rep and good shade. Holds water better than the upstream falls, so a safer bet a few days out. Park along Spyglass near Tacodeli, 2642 Barton Hills Dr.

  • Campbell's Hole at Barton Creek Greenbelt - The mellow, less-crowded pick. Shallow most days, with a deeper jumping section when the creek's up. Easy hike from the Spyglass trailhead. 1601 Spyglass Dr.

  • McKinney Falls State Park - Onion Creek pours over limestone into cool pools at the Upper and Lower Falls, running hard after a storm. A real river, not a creek dip. Reservations and day-use fee required. 5808 McKinney Falls Pkwy.
