Del Valle: From Rural Texas to a High-Speed Entertainment District

Before COTA, the land in Del Valle had a completely different story.

  • • In the 1800s, it was farmland and ranchland, largely untouched apart from early settlements.
  • • By 1942, the U.S. government transformed it into Bergstrom Army Air Field, a major base during World War II and later home to Bergstrom Air Force Base.
  • • When Bergstrom closed in 1993, it became Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, setting the stage for Austin’s explosive growth eastward.
  • • In 2010, plans were announced for Circuit of The Americas, turning what was once an airbase into a world-class motorsports and entertainment district.

Now, Del Valle is evolving into a high-energy entertainment corridor, with COTALAND and new luxury developments pushing it even further into the future.

The Future of COTA and Its Impact on Austin

As Austin continues to grow, Circuit of The Americas is evolving beyond a racetrack into a year-round entertainment hub. With COTALAND, T11 Car Condos, and new infrastructure investments, COTA is positioning itself as a global motorsports and entertainment destination.
In the coming years, Del Valle and the surrounding area could see major new developments, including:

  • A luxury hotel and resort to accommodate the increasing number of high-profile events.
  • Expanded residential and commercial spaces, capitalizing on COTA’s rising status as a tourism and lifestyle destination.
  • A dedicated transit system connecting COTA directly to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and downtown.
  • Additional motorsports experiences, including expanded karting facilities and exclusive track day offerings.
  • More large-scale festivals and entertainment events, leveraging COTA’s existing infrastructure for concerts and multi-day experiences.

With these potential developments and COTA’s push for an F1 contract renewal beyond 2026, the venue is set to play a major role in Austin’s future, shaping the city’s reputation as a premier destination for sports, entertainment, and high-speed thrills.
